Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park is a national park located in Zanzibar, Tanzania. It is the only national park on the island of Zanzibar and is known for its rich biodiversity and unique ecosystems. The park was established in 2004 and covers an area of approximately 50 square Km (19 square miles).
One of the main highlights of Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park is its indigenous forest, which is home to a variety of plant and animal species. The park is particularly famous for its population of the endangered Zanzibar red colobus monkey (Piliocolobus kirkii), which is endemic to Zanzibar. The monkeys are one of the rarest primates in Africa and are a major tourist attraction in the park. Visitors can observe these playful and charismatic monkeys in their natural habitat.
Apart from the red colobus monkeys, Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park also supports a diverse array of wildlife, including Sykes’ monkeys, bushbabies, Ader’s duikers, various bird species, and a wide range of reptiles and amphibians.
In addition to the forest, the park also encompasses a mangrove swamp ecosystem. These mangrove forests serve as important breeding grounds for marine life and provide a valuable buffer against coastal erosion. Visitors can explore the mangroves on guided tours and learn about their ecological significance.
